Our Nýja Lakkrís Licorice Chocolate Vinarterta is made with imported Icelandic candy.

Quirky + Sweet Icelandic black, salty, milk chocolate dipped liquorice is considered divisive, bizarre, beloved and distinctly embedded in Icelandic culture. Our Nýja Lakkrís Liquorice Chocolate Vinarterta goes deep in acknowledging Iceland’s connection to it. The famous Appolo Sukkalaði Lakkrís from Goa Iceland is our key ingredient along with our own fresh ground organic liquorice root.

Just like Vinarterta in its natural plum filled state of deliciousness and debate, this mind-bending ‘terta is executed with a light touch, a big hug and a dash of argument. Embargoes and restrictions on importing candy to Iceland meant that the only candy available in Iceland for hundreds of years was licorice. Icelanders used the same fascinating creativity with liquorice for candy that they used with a bit of flour and dried fruit for Vinarterta in order to meet the appetite for sweets in their remote environment. And love liquorice, or hate it, you gotta admit that this is one amazing product to integrate into our elegantly striped dessert.

As always, our Vinarterta is Hand-Rolled Layers with Organic Custom Milled Flour, Small Batch Creamery Butter, Our Own Pure Fruit Jam and Extracts, and Icelandic Sea Salt. Seven thin fragrant sugar cookies, are enhanced with Nordur Liquorice Salt, and filled with our unique liquorice chocolate plum filling, then iced with buttercream, decorated with Appolo Lakkrís Candies.

That’s 14 ‘oh so good’ layers of all supernatural ingredients. Vínarterta has been connecting and nourishing the bodies, hearts and minds of people of Icelandic descent in a multilayered way for generations.
