It’s a distinctively different (and yummy) striped cake handmade with seven thin fragrant vanilla and almond cookies filled with cardamom flavoured plums, then iced with pure vanilla and almond flavoured buttercream. That’s 14 ‘oh so good’ layers of all natural ingredients. Vínarterta has been connecting and nourishing the bodies, hearts and minds of people of Icelandic descent in a multilayered way for generations. Translated as Vienna Torte, it’s a refined and storied delicious cake, practical and beautiful in its execution, all natural, healthy, not too sweet and packs a lot of unique flavour into a compact serving composed of simple ingredients. We think of it as embodying a wonderfully straightforward, enduring and yet rebellious pure love and pioneer spirit.

We make our cake with Pure Icelandic Extract which is (Já! Yes!) Unconditional love! It’s the one essential, not-so-secret ingredient infused into this great family recipe that makes this cake irresistible. Locally milled premium unbleached minimally processed ‘Viking’ flour, butter churned by one of the last, if not the last, independent dairies in Canada, fresh high quality eggs and cream, and just enough sugar. Add to that a bit of our handmade Icelandic Reyka Vodka Infused Organic Madagascar Vanilla Extract, Nordur Icelandic Sea Salt and some fresh ground Cardamom and you have absolute perfection!

What makes Vinarterta so Delicious, and Distinctively Different? It’s because our cake is true to the virtues of our Amma’s (Icelandic Grandmother’s) Riverton, Manitoba family recipe brought from Iceland in 1875. It is a brilliant combination of simple ingredients layered and filled with our own fruit jam made from unsweetened dried prune plums which are a naturally sweet, healthy, low calorie power food. The cake cures and gets better for up to three weeks refrigerated and up to three months in the freezer.
