Win our Vinur (Friend) Vinarterta. Our friendly Vínarterta for sharing!

At the @thevikingimmigrants Laurie Bertram’s book launch.

“Grand prize for the book launch on Friday Dec 4 at 12 noon EST/ 17:00 GMT (11 am in Winnipeg)! The cardamom pods I posted yesterday are a key ingredient in vínarterta, the striped torte and major #obsession in the Icelandic North American community.

Because I cover the history of vínarterta in my #book (and because it is usually served during the holidays), I thought people would appreciate the chance to win one made by Arden Jackson of vínarterta.ca, one of the most respected vínarterta makers around. The First Lady of Iceland, Eliza Reid, will be joining us to talk about writing, heritage, and holiday traditions. Register for the launch at bit.ly/Vikingbook to join. We’re giving away a few copies of The Viking Immigrants: Icelandic North Americans while we’re at it!”

When I think of Afi, I think of catfish, cribbage, When I think of Afi, I think of catfish, cribbage, children and Christmas.

Afi was all about focusing on priorities.
When he faced a pandemic, I suspect that he did what he had always done.

He would listen, make decisions and take action to care for his family. Then he would fix his nets, push his skiff out onto the lake, and fish.

Amma focused on her priorities too. But, instead of fishing would prepare for the abundance of fish on the way to her. She would fire up the stove, make bread and healthy nutritious meals, and of course some Vinarterta, and other baked treats as a gift of love.

I'm thinking about our family members and friends who have faced enormous challenges in the past. Including, like us, the imminent potential of terrible illness in their communities. It is the teachings of our elders who can lead us to health and safety, if we listen.

I remember stories of my Afi as the guy who returned from WW1, unharmed, only to lose a leg to a hunting accident at home. And yet, he raised nine children, first as a Dairy Farmer, then as a Fisherman. Mighty Lake Winnipeg was a familiar and reassuring resource, unlike any other, for those indomitable Icelanders in New Iceland.

Afi's house and family, and his life on the water, and the ice, were the most important things to him.

Afi was strong, confident and unshakable. He moved in alignment with what he believed to be good. His quiet reserved, straight forward, hardworking approach brought him into balance.

I can still hear Afi humming, with his voice low and see his prosthetic leg stretched out, as he worked on his nets from the stool beside the mink shed.

It was the same place he shared his skill of fileting a Catfish with me, before we went in the house to play Cribbage.

It was the same place he drilled holes in a spruce tree trunk to add more branches to make the Christmas tree fluffy and full.

Afi saw perfection in catfish, cribbage, children and Christmas.

Every day, he ate a good breakfast. Set out his nets. Brought them in. Never retired. Made commitments. And kept them.

He loved everything about us always, unconditionally. Just as I love you.

In Remembrance: Letter to Einar 1918 is to Einar J In Remembrance: Letter to Einar 1918 is to Einar Jóhannsson Stadfeld from his brother Hallgrímur Jóhannsson (Grímur) Stadfeld. It was in Halifax, Nova Scotia on September 22, 1918 during WW1 that these young men prepared for war, trained, competed in sports (those boys from the Riverton area were fast runners), dreamt and thought about home…..

Dear Brother,

Sincere thanks for your letter which I was so happy to receive. You will have to forgive me for how long it took me to answer, but I’m going to make up for it now.

I am absolutely fine. I have plenty to eat and little to do. I have a good bed to sleep in, and most of the men here are friendly, and easy to get along with.....

I am now on a coastal ship – a trawler – that is called ‘St. Eloi’ and is here in the harbour, as is common for that kind of ship. It has one gun with a 12 pound ball (shot), and about 12 men. It is one of the best ships here and has recently been fixed up. I expect that it will leave here fairly soon.
Because 2020. Magnificence. No Matter What. I’ve Because 2020. Magnificence. No Matter What.

And, because 2020, more magnificence is absolutely mandatory.
Since I’ve decided we’re making cake for Holidays and Christmas. (Já! Yes!)
I’ve also decided to put together some special offerings for you.
If you are feeling WTF about this year, I’m working on reworking that for you.
I asked myself….really, what can I do to give you more love?
It’s time to define 2020 as a beautiful sunset, for you, for family, and friends. It’s an opportunity for a defining moment of change.

You are. Like Yggdrasil. (The Tree of Life. The S You are. Like Yggdrasil.
(The Tree of Life. The Source of the Nine Worlds.)
According to Norse Legend it is the mighty tree that rises at the center of the geographic and spiritual cosmos.
As a part of the Nine Worlds, one of the main roots is Miðgard. The space of humans.
These 30 year old trees have a way to go, but for me, they are majestic.
And more, to me at every age and stage, you are even more magnificent.
I am so thankful for you. Even more than the trees.
You are beautiful, appreciated and loved everyday.

Happy National Day of Iceland! "Celebrated to comm Happy National Day of Iceland! "Celebrated to commemorate the foundation of the Republic of Iceland on June 17, 1944.

Jón Sigurðsson (1811-1879), the leader of Iceland’s independence movement in the 19 th century was born June 17, and it was in his honour that this day was chosen to be country’s National Day.

This year’s celebrations are marked by the special circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since Monday, a maximum of 500 people are allowed to gather in Iceland.

Normally, there would be major festivities and a parade in downtown Reykjavík, but this year, celebrations are limited to pop-up events all around the city, some of which include brass bands." - https://icelandmonitor.mbl.is/ @mblfrettir

What do Margréts and Vínarterta have in common What do Margréts and Vínarterta have in common?

I had a remarkable experience leading an amazing group of women who came together to support a friend by making and serving food for a reception of 350 people. (Pre COVID ...sigh.) What struck me was how both individually and together as a team these women simply qualified as particularily stunning in their ability to give effectively and with generosity.
A predominant number of these women were either Margrets, Margarets or Maggas by first or second name, or had mothers, or grandmothers with the name. Of course, most were of Icelandic descent. We decided amongst us that there was a particular energy occurring which could be quantified as ‘Margreting’. Margret became an action verb that day.

I have a mother named Margret, and that day she was demonstrating the verb of Margreting in action by doing what it took to help with serving all those people and wash up after them with no less effort than anyone else. I knew where I learned it from, and was continuing to learn more. I looked around me and embraced the respectful care and love that was being generated by those women and decided I would not forget. I would ask myself each day from that point forward, how have I ‘Margreted’ today? What have I done effectively, with generosity and caring?

Getting cosy with food is a favourite past time in Getting cosy with food is a favourite past time in the so-called quarantine kitchens with emerging bread makers and home chefs cooking up the contents of their pandemic pantries with ideas and techniques learned from prolific new sources and live events streamed on their mobile devices.

How about trying Lovise Beate Augustine Friedel’s Wienertærte recipe from 1795?
L.K. Bertram’s new book ‘Viking Immigrants Icelanders in North America’ shares this early Vinarterta recipe, and more as well as 40 pages on the history of Vinarterta plus, notes and historical references. And it’s more than that.
Laurie brilliantly shares the visible and tangible evolutionary history of Icelandic culture in North America over 150 years. She provides access to the not so visible connecting fibres that have informed how and who we are today through stories of clothing, epidemic, coffee, politics, war, ghost stories and the 'Icelandic cake fight' that is Vinarterta.
Timely, grounded and creative storytelling allows access to a way deeper understanding of where we have come from than you ever thought before. The research is excellent and the tales are real and entertaining.
Laurie channels the Icelander in all of us for whom a ticket to happiness is a properly made cup of strong coffee, curling up with a good book and a bit of argumentative cake.
It will be no surprise when ‘The Viking Immigrants’ becomes a NY Times Best Seller because every curious history buff, Viking descendant and Icelandophile will own one, read it intently and affectionately, while at once critically as they do, with many good cups of coffee and a maybe a slice of Vinarterta.
