Women’s Day Off 50th Anniversary October 24 1975-2025

Grateful for the Women Who Bravely Love Us and Themselves Enough to Show Up for Equality.

‘Improved situation of women improves the situation of her family and of the nation as a whole.’ – Helvi Sipilä

Here’s a speech from October 24, 1975 by Ávarp Bjargar Einarsdóttur :

“Konur! Women! What has happened? Why do we stand here so many?

We have broken our habits and stepped out of our daily routine and now we are looking at it from another angle. Let us realize the pattern of our life. Let us ask ourselves what is our part in it, and if we use our rights and fulfil our duties to the same degree as our fellow men.

This morning each one of us decided for herself whether she should join the other women on the meeting today or stay in her usual place. The decision as such has been an experience which will be of value for us in the future and let us try to make the most of it.

The future goal of our demonstration today is to make us fully aware of that we are citizens equal to any others in society with equal rights and equal responsibility, and thus we will be able to pass on to the younger generation of women the consciousness of equality which will lead to final equality of men and women on the basis of the rights we have already been granted by law. We do not have to wait for social changes from outside – we can change it from within.

Let us at last quote Helvi Sipilä when she was in Reykjavík last summer: “Improved situation of the women improves the situation of her family and of the nation as a whole.”

I am standing on the shoulders of my Mother, and Father who were both champions for equality in their lives, and for me and my siblings. They were role models for my children as well, and I am proud that they demonstrate respect and love for their partners as equals every day.
